Texas Among Nation’s Leaders in Driving the Innovation Economy
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Global Intellectual Property Center (GIPC) released a study highlighting Texas’ contribution to America’s innovation economy. This study is part of GIPC’s State Fact Sheets, which provide a look at the roles innovation and creativity play in each state, highlighting local companies along with interesting IP facts and figures. The fact sheet for Texas and other states can be found here.
“Texas is a leading force in America’s innovation economy,” said Mark Esper, executive vice president of the Chamber’s Global Intellectual Property Center. “In 2007 alone, Texas innovators received 6228 patents, ranking 2nd in the nation for patents granted, which the Lone Star State’s $39.5 billion in high tech exports ranked 2nd nationwide. The value of innovation is found in every corner of the country, as can be seen in Texas,” added Esper.
“The Texas economy depends on the spirit of innovation and entrepreneurism. The home of innovative businesses such as Texas Instruments, Dell Computer, Benchmark Electronics, and EDS, Texas thrives on the intellectual property related industry, and Texans have proven to be innovative themselves. The interstate highway system and the computer ram memory cell are just a few examples of innovative creations deriving from the state,” said Esper. “America has a unique story to tell, and Texas plays a large role in this story. Innovation and creativity are essential to economic growth and human advancement, and Texas’s IP contribution reflect this.”
The Texas State Fact Sheet is intended to be a resource for legislators, policymakers, and the public to identify successful companies, inventors, creative artists, and innovators to better understand the role they play in our economy and society. As part of an easy to use, interactive map, the State Fact Sheet project can be accessed on-line as well as in printable format.
