Cancer Prevention & Research Institute of Texas Executive Director Briefs Dallas/Fort Worth Executives at the Texas on Top of Cancer Research Forum
The Dallas Regional Chamber’s Technology Business Council hosted the Texas on Top of Cancer Research Issue Forum on August 26th. Mr. William Gimson, the newly-appointed Executive Director of the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT), gave the keynote address briefing an audience of over 100 life science and healthcare executives from across the state on the Institute’s priorities for cancer research and how Texas will make its mark in the fight against cancer.
The Institute’s mission is to invest in cutting-edge, Texas-based research in the field of cancer and to fund commercialization projects aimed to treat and prevent cancer. In his keynote address, Gimson discussed the ways in which CPRIT will impact the state’s cancer research climate and how Texas will be able to recruit cancer research talent to strengthen its life science industry.

“It is a privilege for me to be part of CPRIT and to have a role in the historic part Texas will play in the fight against cancer,” said Gimson. “The CPRIT team promises the people of Texas that we will be good stewards of the public’s trust by funding only the best scientific research and prevention activities, measuring what we do and reporting back regularly on our progress.”
The event also included a panel discussion on “Trends in Funding, Federal Programs & the Future,” which featured industry experts from the American Cancer Society, Santé Ventures, and the Mary Crowley Cancer Research Centers. Panelists discussed the national landscape for cancer research, including developments at the National Cancer Institute, the cancer research funding environment, experiences with local cancer research companies, and current opportunities for the industry.
