Congratulations are in order to the Leadership Dallas Class of 2010 who officially graduate today. Founded in 1975, Leadership Dallas is the flagship program of the Dallas Regional Chamber for leadership development. Approximately 55 people are selected to participate each year. During the 10-month program, participants receive in-depth education on critical issues in the community including criminal justice, education, government and politics, as well as a history of the area, healthcare, and human services. Also part of the 10-month program is a class service project that allows the class to put their skills and passion to work for the community.
This year’s class project was the renovation of an outdoor recreational area at Austin Street Center, a therapeutic community serving over 400 men, women and children daily. The effort included: installing two handicap access ramps, a decorative pathway, an 8 foot privacy fence, screening hedge, and prayer garden; laying Bermuda grass sod; planting flowerbeds, ground cover, and trees; painting the existing gazebo; repairing playground equipment and furnishing ground material for safe recreational use; and building a large, open dining/event pavilion featuring six picnic tables. The class also donated $20,000 to the facility during a ribbon cutting for the new recreational area on May 27th.
