“To Be or Not To Be” an LD Alumnus?

Lynne Mabry, Leadership Dallas Class of 2011

For me, that was not a question.  Upon graduation from Leadership Dallas in 2011, I joined the LD Alumni Association with my only exposure to and interest at the time being the annual Mayor’s Breakfast.  I expected to join and attend – that’s it.  As our class kept connected through monthly breakfast meetings, we showed up in great numbers as the “new grads” at the LD Alumni Annual Leadership Luncheon in the fall.  Of course, with the thrill of our first formal event as graduates, we spent most of our time catching up with each other, and little with other alumni.  The highly anticipated Mayors Breakfast soon arrived.  In the breakfast line I introduced myself to another LD Alumni who asked “what are you doing?”  I shared with her my passion for volunteerism with social services organizations and before I knew it, I was the newest member of the LDA Outreach and Volunteerism committee!  It was the perfect opportunity for me to pursue something I was passionate about, and wasn’t just about joining and attending; it was about being an alumnus– engaging.  I have enjoyed working with alumni from many classes on the committee, and found opportunities to recruit my class members to participate in our next big Volunteerism event scheduled for early 2013 (more details later).  This is one of many opportunities LDA has available to engage.  So what are you waiting for?  Join, attend, and BE an alumnus.
